What do farmers and food activists in the US have in common with farmers around the world? How can we develop a system of fair trade that respects each nation’s right to provide food for its people? What lessons can be learned about organizing for justice across borders?

WHY (World Hunger Year) and The New School invite you to a free evening discussion on global food justice featuring prominent farm leaders from Latin America, the US, and Canada. The farm leaders will discuss the movement for food sovereignty, their struggles for land reform and fair trade, and how to build solidarity and action across borders. Confirmed speakers include:

Braulio Álvarez, Venezuelan National Assemblyman and National Coordinator of CANEZ, Venezuela’s largest peasant group
Juan Tiney Ixbalán, General Coordinator of CONIC, Guatemala’s National Peasant and Indigenous Coordinating Organization
George Naylor, President of the National Family Farm Coalition, which represents family farms and rural groups in the U.S.
Additional speakers from Ecuador, Nicaragua, Bolivia, and Brazil have been invited. The panel will be moderated by Colleen Ross, Ontario Program Manager of Heifer International and the Women’s President of the National Farmers Union of Canada.
